“Heshima,” a Swahili word meaning dignity and honor, reflects the deep reverence found in African culture and embodied by the Eland Antelope.

 

Across southern and eastern Africa, it is regarded as sacred, appearing in ancient cave art, rock engravings, and folklore as “the animal of a thousand legends.” Many groups believed the eland was the first creature created by God, linking it to divine power and the sun.
